El lugar fue escenario durante 65 años de eventos artísticos, culturales y deportivos.
El recalentamiento por sobrecarga eléctrica en el restaurante “Lo de Nené” provocó un incendio que se expandió a las viejas y muy combustibles instalaciones del emblemático club, provocándole daños totales. “El club Bernardo O’Higgins jugó un rol fundamental en el arraigo de pobladores argentinos y chilenos en la zona” – expresaron desde la institución.
Los vecinos de Río Grande vieron con impotencia cómo el sábado 28 de octubre alrededor de las 18, pese a la tenaz lucha opuesta por los bomberos, el fuego se extendió imparable desde un restaurante lindero a la tirantería del techo del Club Bernardo O’higgins, lo envolvió y terminó por consumir su estructura hasta hacerlo colapsar.
Al lugar concurrieron bomberos voluntarios y de la Policía provincial, con camiones cisterna, autobombas y camiones abastecedores de agua del Municipio, en un intento desesperado por frenar el incendio iniciado en el sector de la cocina del restaurante “Lo de Nené”, ubicado del lado derecho del edificio del club sito en la calle Perito Moreno 828. En simultáneo, una brigada bomberil se debió abocar a enfriar el exterior del local emplazado a la izquierda, en donde funciona el estudio jurídico contable Loffler y otra a preservar una pequeña casa de madera, en los fondos y sobre la calle Estrada.
Recién tres horas más tarde se logró extinguir el incendio múltiple, que se reavivó horas más tarde pero que fue inmediatamente controlado por la guardia de ceniza implementada, debiéndose posponer para el día siguiente la remoción de escombros y realización de pericias dada la oscuridad reinante.
Una vez efectuada la revisión de la cocina del restaurante, en donde se localizó el foco igneo, los peritos bomberiles informaron que el siniestro tuvo su origen en una sobrecarga eléctrica, siendo en ese sector las pérdidas muy importantes. En el viejo caserón en donde funcionaba el Club O’higgins, en tanto, las pérdidas fueron totales.
Desde la institución se emitió un comunicado en el que se destacó: “Nuestro querido Club Bernardo O’Higgin ha sufrido un siniestro impensable. Quienes lo llevamos adelante, jugadores de fútbol, futsal, básquet, vóley, handball, la comisión directiva y simpatizantes, nos encontramos entristecidos por la gran pérdida sufrida. Nuestro club de 65 años, siempre ha acompañado distintos acontecimientos históricos de nuestra ciudad, fue fundado por nuestros antiguos pobladores en pos del progreso deportivo y cultural. Debemos y queremos continuar aportando a nuestra ciudad”.
Vale destacarse que la histórica casa de dos plantas fue también escenario de encuentros de muchos pobladores recién llegados a la isla a partir de mediados del siglo pasado, procedentes de nuestro país y también de Chile, quienes encontraron entre sus paredes el calor de hogar y la compañía que les permitió sobrellevar la soledad y la añoranza de sus familias.
