La agencia de seguridad sanitaria indicó que deben confinarse y evitar viajes o contactos con mujeres embarazadas y niños
Las autoridades sanitarias del Reino Unido emitieron este lunes una recomendación de aislamiento de 21 días para las personas que están en riesgo de haberse contagiado de la viruela del mono, después de que el país registrase ya 20 casos.
La Agencia de Seguridad Sanitaria del Reino Unido (UKHSA, por sus siglas en inglés) hizo esta petición para todos aquellos que hayan tenido un contacto directo con un caso confirmado de la viruela del mono, cuyos síntomas incluyen fiebre, dolores musculares, cansancio, ganglios linfáticos inflamados y una erupción.
La UKHSA recomendó también este lunes que quienes han estado en contacto con una persona que tenga esta enfermedad que faciliten sus contactos, no viajen y eviten cualquier proximidad con mujeres embarazadas o niños menores de 12 años.
La viruela del mono se está transmitiendo entre la población sin que los expertos hayan podido establecer un vínculo directo con los países donde este virus es considerado endémico.
Según los expertos, las personas con más riesgo de contagio son aquellas que tienen contacto físico con alguien infectado y que presente síntomas.
Este virus que es endémico de algunas regiones de África puede ser transmitido por contacto con animales o con lesiones en la piel o fluidos de una persona infectada.
El domingo, la Organización Mundial de la Salud dijo que hay que esperar que sigan apareciendo casos. “La situación está evolucionando de tal modo que la OMS cree que habrá más casos de viruela de mono que se identifiquen a medida que la vigilancia se extiende en países que no son endémicos”, señaló la organización en una nota epidemiológica.
La OMS indicó que está trabajando en directivas para proteger a los trabajadores sanitarios de primera línea y a otros empleados de la sanidad que pueden estar más expuestos que otros, como los que se ocupan de tareas de limpieza.
La secuencia genómica obtenida del hisopado de un caso en Portugal ha revelado una similitud con el virus de la viruela exportado de Nigeria y que causó brotes en el Reino Unido, Israel y Singapur entre 2018 y 2019.
La inmunidad frente a esta enfermedad es muy escasa entre la población joven en vista de que la población por debajo de los 40 o 50 años no ha recibido la vacuna contra la viruela y el virus no ha estado presente en países no endémicos. Los países endémicos son: Benín, Camerún, República Centroafricana, República Democrática del Congo, Gabón, Ghana (aquí solo se la ha identificado entre animales), Costa de Marfil, Liberia, Nigeria, República del Congo (Brazaville), Sierra Leona y Sudán del Sur.
